Overview

The Timeline view displays your items on a horizontal time axis, similar to a Gantt chart. Each item appears as a bar spanning from its start date to its end date. This view is ideal for project planning, resource allocation, and tracking deadlines.

Requirements

To use the Timeline view, your board needs at least one Date column. For the best experience, you should have:
  • A Start Date column
  • An End Date (or Due Date) column
If an item only has a single date, it will appear as a single-day marker on the timeline rather than a bar.

Setting Up the Timeline

1

Switch to Timeline View

Click the Timeline tab in the view switcher at the top of your board.
2

Configure Date Mapping

On first use, select which columns to map as the Start Date and End Date. You can change this mapping at any time in view settings.
3

Choose Time Scale

Select the time scale: Day, Week, Month, or Quarter. Use the zoom controls or scroll to adjust.

Interacting with the Timeline

Adjusting Dates

  • Drag a bar left or right to change both the start and end dates
  • Drag the left edge of a bar to change only the start date
  • Drag the right edge of a bar to change only the end date
  • Double-click a bar to open the item detail panel

Dependencies

Create dependencies between items to show which tasks must be completed before others can begin:
  1. Hover over an item bar to reveal the dependency handles (small circles on each end)
  2. Drag from the right handle of the predecessor to the left handle of the successor
  3. An arrow will connect the two items
Obeya Cloud supports four dependency types: Finish-to-Start (default), Start-to-Start, Finish-to-Finish, and Start-to-Finish. Right-click a dependency arrow to change its type.

Milestones

Items with the same start and end date (or a single date) appear as diamond-shaped milestones on the timeline.

Grouping and Filtering

  • Items are grouped by their board groups, shown as horizontal swimlanes
  • Use the Group By dropdown to group by any column (e.g., Assignee, Priority)
  • Use the Filter toolbar to show only relevant items

Color Coding

Timeline bars are color-coded based on a chosen column. By default, they use the group color. You can change the color source to any Status, Label, or Priority column from the view settings.

Today Marker

A vertical red line indicates today’s date. Items that extend past today without being marked as “Done” are highlighted as potentially overdue.

Critical Path

Enable Critical Path from view settings to highlight the longest chain of dependent items. This helps identify which tasks, if delayed, would push back the overall project completion.
The Critical Path feature requires dependencies to be set up between items. Without dependencies, the critical path cannot be calculated.

Exporting

Click the export icon to download the timeline as a PNG image or PDF. This is useful for sharing project timelines in presentations or reports.
